Coffee & Conversations

We meet together on the second Tuesday of each month from 10:00-11:00 am for a time of informal yet thoughtful discussion. It's a safe, informal, non-judgmental space for asking questions, sharing thoughts and wondering aloud.  Any and all people are invited and welcome.

We meet on the outside terrace between the Safeway store and Philz coffee at the  Rockridge Safeway of College Avenue at 6310 College Avenue, Oakland, CA, 94618

Community Bible Study - Wednesdays

Our mid week Community Bible Study meets online via Zoom on Wednesdays 7:00-7:50pm. Our time together is primarily one of discussion, following an initial time of teaching and exposing the unique and problematic elements in the selected text.  The principal goal is to teach skills and resources to help read the scripture texts thoughtfully through their historical meaning, vocabulary, Biblical intertextuality in view of glimpsing what they might mean for us today. Any and all are invited.

We meet each week to read the scripture text for worship together and dialogue about it - wrestling with what the scripture says and means for us. As Jacob wrested with the Angel in Genesis 22, refusing to stop striving until he left blessed with greater understanding and vision.

Each week you can find a downloadable study sheet, with examen questions, that we'll use in our conversation around the text.  This class space is not a lecture, but a discussion; a chance for those who gather in community to strive with the text, reading it through our own experiences, life together and spiritual journeys.

Pastor Monte will post textual study notes (similar to a Talmudic text) here that you can use for your own private reflection or bring with you to the class.  You can also engage the text via Monte's weekly blog posting, which seeks to flesh out principal interpretations of the text of the week for our life today. Our Book Club meets in different formats based on those who are reading the book.  Look for more information in regards to the particular book we're reading. All are welcome, whether you've barely cracked the book or already broken the binding from rereading it.

Upcoming book club discussions will be posted here and on our calendar.

Community Bible Study - Sunday Edition

Our Sunday Community Bible Study meets in person on Sundays at 9:30-10:15am, just before our weekly gathering. Our time together is structure around wrestling with the scripture that is being used as the foundation for our weekly Sunday gathering. Women’s Group

We gather on Saturday morning to support each other through sharing, prayer, and study. Many times we let our discussion be inspired by a book, current events, or Bible readings. We meet the first three Saturdays of the month, at 8:30 a.m. Come join us!

Race Matters

Many church members have expressed interest in class or small-group discussions around issues of race, Christian faith, and life in the Church.  We can do this on Zoom.  In fact, it's almost easier as you can join in such a conversation without having to fight traffic to drive across the city.

For the past year plus we’ve been curating several we’re learning communities in which we can dialogue about race matters.

Our principal learning space is called Race Matters : meeting Monday Nights 6-7pm on Zoom | a class using principal readings and videos that have shaped the current national discussion about racial justice and white supremacy. Each class is intended to be led in part by members of our own church community.
