FAITH IN THE PUBLIC SQUARE

We believe that our faith is integral in our life as individual people, a community of followers of Jesus and also important in how we live our life in the public square as citizens, neighbors and advocates for justice. We share ways in which you can learn and be involved in actions through our blog. You can go there to learn about what the Church is doing in the public square as well as ways to work with other members of the CAPC Oakland community to act locally.

“Worship is not a spectator sport” as we often say. We’re seeking to use more technological tools to help maximize the participation of our congregational members in the leading of worship on Sunday mornings. You don’t have to know how to do this already. Our church leadership will help train, equip and prepare you.

THE FRIDAY NIGHT MEAL

Each Friday night, our church and volunteers serve approximately 100 meals to unhoused and other members of our local community. You can help! We welcome the help of children and families too! Learn more, and sign-up to help…

the book of acts

Throughout the Spring and early Summer we’re wrestling wtih the story of the Book of Acts on Sundays and in our group discussions. We’ll wrestle with this story of the beginning of the Church and how we are called to be Church today, here and now in the midst of all that’s happening. Our series will tease out the paramount moments in the narrative of the beginning of the Church and use those as ways to look at our own life, vocation and sense of community today in 2025.

We’re reading a couple thoughtful essays written by leaders of our national Presbyterian Church of the USA. They are PDFs that you can download, taken from a larger collection produced by our national church. You can find them - and other resources - on our book club webpage.

Our service is casual with folks dressing according to California Bay Area style from jeans to trousers, shorts to dresses.  Those who worship with us live from the flats to the hills, permanently and marginally homed.  We gather after each weekly service for coffee and snacks for 30-45 minutes.

We have a program for children K-6th during the service using the Godly Play curriculum.  Kids start with the whole community in the service before leaving about 10 minutes later.

You can learn a bit more about who and how we are today through text and images on this website, and also by the glimpse that some of our other online spaces may give you here.....  Blog | FB | Twitter
